Edwardian Coat, ca. 1906 – Cream Broadcloth, Panne Velvet & Pagoda Cuffs

Construction & Materials

This rare Edwardian coat, dating to circa 1906, is a beautifully preserved example of antique fashion and early 20th‑century American tailoring. Made from dense wool broadcloth in a refined cream shade, it carries the original maker’s label A. Defenburg, Philadelphia, confirming its provenance and craftsmanship.

The coat showcases:

  • luxurious panne velvet

  • ornate passe‑partout trim

  • distinctive two‑layer pagoda cuffs

These elements place the garment firmly within the high‑end aesthetic of Edwardian outerwear, making it an exceptional piece for collectors, stylists, and museums.

Design & Details

The front closes with brass buttons set with glass inlays — one historically replaced. Inside, the coat is lined with smooth satin silk, providing comfort, warmth, and elegant drape.

The silhouette reflects the transitional style of the mid‑Edwardian period, combining structured tailoring with decorative luxury.

Condition

Preserved in very good condition, with:

  • tiny holes in the wool

  • small tears in the silk lining at the collar and underarm

  • stable velvet and passementerie

These minor signs of wear are typical for garments of this period. The coat can still be worn carefully today, offering a blend of authenticity, historical elegance, and sustainable vintage fashion.

Decorative elements shown in photos are not included.
